Some of our clients have received a notice from a company offering to procure a copy of their real estate deed for a fee of $84.00.  The service is apparently real, but not really necessary nor a good deal. You can get a copy of your deed for free either online at your county registry website,  (www.lowelldeeds.com for those in the Lowell area) or in person or by mail from the registry (you might have to pay postage).  You can also get a certified copy for a small fee if you really want one, but it’s only a few dollars.  The letter from the service agency seems to be written in a way to make you think you have to comply and send the fee. If you have any questions about a recent real estate transaction – just call your attorney and ask. If you already have a copy of your deed, you don’t need to get another and you shouldn’t have to pay $84 to get one.
